Vegetation-induced soil stabilization in coastal area: An example from a natural mangrove forest

چکیده

Mangrove forests provide essential ecosystem services in tropical and semitropical regions by supporting their natural regeneration other biosystem processes, offering livelihood for local communities, contributing significantly to the resources. Systematic analyses on protective role of mangrove effects reducing coastal erosion have been carried out rarely. Mangroves form a complex that increases substrate stabilization dissipates wave energy favouring deposition fine material. This study focuses assessing white (Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh.) roots stabilizing coastline. In site located Southern Iran, series field laboratory measurements were conducted root systems collected from transects perpendicular Root samples soil cores at fixed distances tree stems three layers seaward landward positions. Moreover, tensile tests estimate biomechanical characteristics which provided data parameters reinforcement models. Also, spatial distribution intrinsic-variability components relation horizontal vertical stem calculated. Three models Wu & Waldron (W&W), Fiber Bundle (FBM), Weibull (RBMw) applied. results showed Volume Ratio (RVR) Number Roots (NoR) decreased with distance stem. forces increased diameter. Finally, calculated reinforcements 0.75 m associated highest value while lowest was observed 1.50 The differences between positions minor. Soil detachment ratio (SDR) approximately 10% higher landwards than seaward, due different geomorphological conditions affected process. similartity values among suggest density may not be an important parameter managing as protection measure. Yet, RVR NoR increasing depth being positions, could improve potential nature-based solution shoreline protection.

An Evaluation of Plotless Sampling Using Vegetation Simulations and Field Data from a Mangrove Forest

In vegetation science and forest management, tree density is often used as a variable. To determine the value of this variable, reliable field methods are necessary. When vegetation is sparse or not easily accessible, the use of sample plots is not feasible in the field. Therefore, plotless methods, like the Point Centred Quarter Method, are often used as an alternative. In this study we invest...

soil water availability and the renewal of oak forest stands in a coastal mediterranean area: an experimental study

this study was aimed to assess the causes of the structural decline in the renewal rate of apristine oak forest close to rome (central italy) by analyzing long-term measurements of the water budget in open and fenced areas. despite dry climate conditions in the area, long-term soil moisture measurements at 100 cm soil depth indicated that an enough large amount of water is available to oaks dur...

Soil changes induced by hardwood and coniferous tree plantations establishment: Comparison with natural forest soil at Berenjestanak lowland forest in north of Iran

Increasing urbanisation and industrialisation have led to a dramatic reduction in forest area, and now only culturally protected remnants of natural forests and some new plantations remain in most areas of the north of Iran. To investigate the status of the chemical and physical characteristics of soil under these remnant forests and assess the possible impacts of reforestation on soil properti...
